I learned about “faking it” long before I ever became a manager. The first time I put on a “mask” at work was in 2003, selling TVs at Future Shop. I performed, I faked confidence, and I made the sale. It’s a great strategy for sales, but a terrible one for management. Your team sees right through it.

When I did make the transition to leadership, I realized the skills that made me successful in the past were no longer the most important. It was a lonely, overwhelming journey.

That’s why I wrote this book. I made it my mission to collect the wisdom I was never taught. I sat down with more than fifty senior managers, directors, and executives to understand what they wish they had known when they were starting out.
